Men’s lacrosse: Badder’s five points help Comets defeat Trine, 13-11, in MIAA-opener
Junior Dakota Badder’s team-leading five points (four goals and one assist) helped the Olivet College men’s lacrosse team defeat Trine (Ind.) University, 13-11, in its MIAA-opener tonight at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
OLIVET, Mich. – Junior Dakota Badder's team-leading five points (four goals and one assist) helped the Olivet College men's lacrosse team defeat Trine (Ind.) University, 13-11, in its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) opener tonight at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
The Comets took an early 3-0 lead on goals by Badder, sophomore Shane Prunty and junior James Collins. The first two goals were scored in a 10-second span. The Thunder scored five of the next six goals to take a 5-4 lead with 1:22 remaining in the opening quarter. Junior Jack Ranson scored an unassisted goal with 30 ticks left to tie the game, 5-5, at the end of the quarter.
Trine surged ahead 6-5 with a goal one minute and 28 seconds into the second quarter. Olivet scored the final three goals of the quarter to take a 9-7 halftime lead. Badder scored twice in that stretch, with the last one coming with only 11 seconds remaining in the quarter.
The two teams traded goals in the third quarter for a 10-8 score. Ranson put the Comets ahead by three, 11-8, with an unassisted tally at the 13:15 mark of the fourth quarter. Paul Carlquist netted two goals to bring the Thunder deficit down to one, 11-10, with 11:57 left in the game.
Badder scored off a pass from Collins to put Olivet back up by two, 12-10. After Trine made the score 12-11, Prunty sealed the win with an unassisted goal 13 seconds later.
To go along with Badder's five points, Collins and Ranson had four points apiece. Collins finished with two goals and two assists, while Ranson had three goals and one assist. Prunty scored twice, and sophomore Tyler Polendo had two points (one goal and one assist). Sophomore Charlie Haesler, this week's MIAA Defensive Player of the Week, netted his first-ever collegiate goal.
Sophomore David Smith started the game in goal and allowed five goals in 13 minutes and 38 seconds. Junior Ryan McGee played the remaining 46 minutes and 22 seconds in net, and collected eight saves to earn the win.
The Comets (3-6, 1-0 MIAA) continue league play Saturday when they plays a 1 p.m. game at Calvin College.
