Men’s lacrosse: Olivet falls to Carthage, 15-8
The Olivet College men’s lacrosse team played even with Carthage University in the second and fourth quarters, but the Big Red outscored the Comets, 11-4, in the first and third quarters for a 15-8 win tonight at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
KENOSHA, Wis. – The Olivet College men's lacrosse team played even with Carthage University in the second and fourth quarters, but the Big Red outscored the Comets, 11-4, in the first and third quarters for a 15-8 win tonight at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Carthage opened the game with five straight goals to go up 5-0 with 5:08 left in the first quarter. Sophomore Logan Krieger scored the first Olivet goal at the 3:18 mark. The Big Red answered immediately after the faceoff to take a 6-1 lead. Junior James Collins netted an unassisted goal with 19 ticks remaining in the opening quarter for a 6-2 score.
Collins scored two straight unassisted goals at the 8:08 mark and 5:08 mark of the second quarter to trim the Comets' deficit down to two goals, 6-4. Carthage responded with its own 2-0 run to gain an 8-4 lead at halftime.
The Big Red continued their run in the first four minutes and four seconds of the third stanza to go up 11-4. The teams traded goals over the final 5:44 of the quarter to keep Carthage's lead at seven, 13-6.
The Big Red scored the first goal of the fourth quarter before sophomore Nino Minaudo recorded a man-up goal off a pass from Collins to make the score 14-7 with 7:19 left in the contest. Carthage scored its final goal at the 3:16 mark. Olivet found the back of the net for the final time with 56 seconds remaining.
Collins finished the game with four points, three goals and one assist, to go along with a team-leading seven shots. Minaudo had three points, two goals and one assist. Krieger and sophomores Tyler Polendo and Shane Prunty each scored once. Junior Hunter Teare won 12 face-offs.
Junior Ryan McGee started in the goal and made eight saves in 41 minutes and 35 seconds of playing time. Sophomore David Smith finished the game in between the pipes, recording three saves.
The Comets travel to play Augustana (Ill.) College Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. CST.
