Men’s lacrosse team beats Calvin, 21-7, to secure spot in MIAA Tournament
Eight different players scored at least one goal, as the Olivet College men’s lacrosse team defeated Calvin College, 21-7, in its MIAA regular season finale this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
OLIVET, Mich. – Eight different players scored at least one goal, as the Olivet College men's lacrosse team defeated Calvin College, 21-7, in its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) regular season finale this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. With their win and Trine (Ind.) University's loss to Hope College, the Comets share third-place with both schools in the final MIAA standings. Tiebreakers give the No. 4 seed in the 2014 MIAA Tournament to Olivet, where it will face No. 1 seed Adrian College.
The Comets raced out to a 6-0 lead behind two goals each by sophomore Cameron Bazin (Troy/Athens) and freshman Nino Minaudo (Rochester Hills/Stoney Creek), and one each by sophomores Dakota Badder (Troy/Athens) and Jack Ranson (Nobleton, Ontario/St. Michael's). A goal scoring flurry happened in the final 1:43 of the opening quarter, with both teams score netting two goals for an 8-2 score.
Olivet scored three straight goals, including two by Badder to start the second quarter. The end of the second period was the same as the end of the first period, with the two teams trading goals to make the score 13-4 at halftime.
The Knights and Comets exchanged the first two goals of the third quarter. Olivet responded by scoring the final three goals of the period to gain a 17-5 lead entering the final quarter. Four different Comets scored a goal in the fourth quarter. Calvin netted two goals in the period, but it was not enough.
For the game, Bazin scored five goals. Badder tallied six points with three goals and three assists. Freshman Tyler Polendo (Battle Creek/Lakeview) had four goals. Minaudo and sophomore Matt Arb (Troy/Athens) each collected two goals and one assist. Collins and Ranson scored two goals apiece. Freshman Josh Lee (Rochester Hills/Stoney Creek) netted his first collegiate goal.
Senior Kyle Borek (Lansing/Holt) broke the single-game school record with seven caused turnovers. Junior Ryan McGee (Traverse City/Central) was the goalie in the first half. He allowed four goals on seven shots. Freshman David Smith (Royal Oak) was in net for the final 30 minutes, collecting eight saves while allowing three goals.
The semifinal game of the MIAA Tournament will be played next Thursday, May 1, at 7 p.m.
