Men’s lacrosse team beats Wilmington, 11-1, in home-opener
The Olivet College men’s lacrosse team opened its home schedule at the Cutler Athletic Complex today with an 11-1 win over Wilmington (Ohio) College.
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College men's lacrosse team opened its home schedule at the Cutler Athletic Complex today with an 11-1 win over Wilmington (Ohio) College.
The Comets scored their only goal in the first quarter at the 11:49 mark when freshman Mike Angeli (Rochester/Stoney Creek) tallied an unassisted goal. Olivet added two more goals in the second quarter to take a 3-0 lead at halftime.
The first goal was at the 11:24 by sophomore James Collins (Lowell) off a pass from Angeli, and the second goal at the 4:04 mark by freshman Nino Minaudo (Rochester Hills/Stoney Creek) off a pass from sophomore Cameron Bazin (Troy/Athens).
Olivet stretched its lead to 7-0 with four goals, including two by Bazin, in the third stanza. The last goal was scored with only one second left in the period. The Comets added three more goals to start the final period. Wilmington put its goal on the scoreboard with 3:13 remaining in the game before Olivet got the goal back in the final minute.
For the game, the Comets out-shot the Quakers, 49-15, with 25-3 edge in the first half. Olivet also won nine face-offs to six for Wilmington. Collins finished the game with three goals. Angeli and Bazin each had two goals and one assist for three points. Minaudo also had three points on one goal and two assists.
Sophomore Matt Arb (Troy/Athens) and freshman Tyler Poledno (Battle Creek/Lakeview) had one goal and one assist apiece for two points. Sophomore Jack Ranson (Nobleton, Ontario/St. Michael's Catholic) scored once. Bazin topped the team with nine shots, followed by Minaudo (eight), Ranson (eight), Collins (seven) and Angeli (six).
Junior Ryan McGee (Traverse City/Central) started and played the first three quarters in goal. Freshman David Smith (Royal Oak) and sophomore Hunter Teare (Trumbull, Conn.) split time in the fourth quarter.
Olivet begins a stretch of four games in four states Saturday when it travels to play Benedictine (Ill.) University at 4 p.m. CST/5 p.m. EST.
