OLIVET, Mich. – Bill Maas has been named the head men's golf coach at Olivet College, according to an announcement by Athletic Director Dave Sichterman. Maas will continue to serve as head coach of the Comet women's golf program.
"I am thrilled for Bill to take over the men's golf program," said Sichterman. "Over the last 13 years, he has done a great job with our women's golf program. I am hopeful Bill can get the men's golf program turned around and back into one of the elite programs in the conference."
A 1989 graduate of Olivet, Maas has served as head coach of the women's golf program since the 2002-03 season. During that time, the Comets have finished in first- or second-place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) standings each of the last 11 years, with conference titles in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2012 and 2013. In addition, Maas has led his team to the NCAA Division III National Championships six of the last seven seasons, finishing as high as ninth in 2007. He has coached four MIAA Most Valuable Golfers and two more who were four-time first-team All-MIAA honorees.
Maas' teams have also excelled in the class room. The Comets have earned the MIAA Team GPA award eight times, including the past seven years. In addition, 15 golfers have combined to earn 32 Women's Golf Coaches Association Scholar All-American awards.
Maas will look to rejuvenate a men's golf program, which has a storied history. From 1978-2008, the Comets won 19 MIAA championships and finished no worse than third-place under the leadership of Gary Morrison, the winningest men's golf coach in league history.
"I am excited about this opportunity," said Maas. "I am confident I can carry over my success with the women's program to the men's program. It's likely to take some time, but I am sure it will happen."
