The Olivet College men’s golf team sits in 13th-place after the first round of its own tournament, the Lou Collins Memorial at the Bedford Valley Country Club in Battle Creek.
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – The Olivet College men's golf team sits in 13th-place after the first round of its own tournament, the Lou Collins Memorial at the Bedford Valley Country Club in Battle Creek.
The Comets posted a 321 team score. Owens Community College (Ohio) leads the 17-team field with a 298. Bethel (Ind.) College is second at 300, followed by Kalamazoo College at 302. Indiana Wesleyan University and Spring Arbor University are tied for fourth with 304s. Philip Weppernig from Owens and Tommy Cardle from Wheaton (Ill.) College top the player standings with one-under par 71s.
Making his collegiate debut on the golf course, freshman Matt Sherry (Salem Township/South Lyon East) led Olivet with a 76. He fired a 37 on the front nine, and a 39 on the back nine. Senior Nick Julian (Clinton Twp./Clintondale) carded an 80, including a team-best 38 on the back nine.
Freshman Daniel Buehler (Delton/Hastings) shot a 41 on the front nine and improved by one stroke on the back nine for an 81. Sophomore Benjamin Hart (Rockford/Lowell) completed his round in 84 strokes. Senior Chris Watkins (Bangor) finished his round in 93 strokes.
The Comets' "B" team had a 373 team score. Their scores were 85 by freshman Joseph Gauck (Belding/Lowell), 89 by freshman Zachary Gray (Utica/East Detroit), 97 by junior Jake Maas (Olivet) and 102 by freshman Jacob VanDeusen (Clinton Twp./Clintondale).
The second round of the tournament features an 8 a.m. shotgun start tomorrow morning.
