Men’s basketball: Mount Union defeats Olivet, 77-48
The Olivet College men’s basketball team fell to University of Mount Union (Ohio), 77-48, tonight in the first day of the Holland Sentinel/Russ Devette Classic at the DeVos Fieldhouse in Holland.
HOLLAND, Mich. – The Olivet College men's basketball team fell to University of Mount Union (Ohio), 77-48, tonight in the first day of the Holland Sentinel/Russ Devette Classic at the DeVos Fieldhouse in Holland.
Olivet led in the early stages of the game, 2-0, 4-3 and 6-5, before the Purple Raiders ripped off a 49-9 run to take a 54-15 lead. Sophomore R.J. Haas made a basket in the closing seconds of the half to make the score 54-17 at the break.
The Comets scored the first four points of the second half to trail by a 54-21 score. Mount Union answered with a 10-0 run to take its largest lead of the game, 64-21, with 13:48 remaining. Olivet's deficit at the end of the game would be the closest it got in the second stanza.
Making his debut in a Comet uniform, freshman Ryan Anderson scored a team-leading eight points, including two three-pointers in the final 90 seconds of the game. Haas, sophomore Eric Ewing and freshman Ben Temrowski had six points apiece. Haas also grabbed nine rebounds and made a single-game, school-record seven steals.
Jarrett Ruffin led Mount Union with a game-high 17 points. JJ Kukura joined him in double figures with 12 points.
Olivet will play University of Pittsburg at Greensburg (Pa.) in a second day of the tournament tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
