FREELAND, Mich. – Olivet College sophomore Akeem Benjamin has been tabbed the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Special Teams Player of the Week. The honor is for his performance in the football team's 59-7 win over Manchester (Ind.) University.
Benjamin returned the game's opening kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown. The 97 yards is the third-longest kickoff return in school history. After the Olivet defense forced a three-and-out for the Spartans on their first drive, he returned the punt 15 yards. The return put the Comets on the Manchester 48 and Olivet drove the field for a touchdown to go up 14-0. Later in the game, Benjamin had a 30-yard punt return, but a Comet penalty gave the ball back to the Spartans.
Olivet returns to the field Saturday at Millsaps (Miss.) College. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET/12 p.m. CT.
