OLIVET, Mich. -- Three Olivet College football players have been selected for All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) honors. Sophomore wide receiver Kyle Bryson (Rives Junction/Leslie) and freshman defensive lineman Justin Madar (Holt) are first-team selections, while sophomore quarterback Braden Black (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) is a second-team pick. In addition, senior punter Anthony Edwards (Clarksville/Lakewood) has received the Pete Schmidt Scholar-Athlete award. All-league honors are based on the player's statistics during the six-game league schedule.
In MIAA play, Bryson ranked among the MIAA leaders in total receiving yards (second, 629); receiving yards per game (second, 104.8); total points (second, 52); points per game (8.7); total receptions (tied for third, 49); and receptions per game (tied for third, 6.83). Black was second in passing yards (1,506), passing yards per game (251.0), total offensive yards (1,758) and total offense per game (293.0), and third in passing efficiency (127.5). Madar was among the league leaders in total tackles for loss (fourth, 10), tackles for loss per game (sixth, 1.17) and quarterback sacks (sixth, five).
For the entire 10-game schedule, Black broke Olivet's single-season records for pass attempts (308), completions (191), touchdowns (20) and yards (2,527). He also led the Comets' ground game with 103 carries for 370 yards and seven touchdowns. Bryson caught 46 passes for 686 yards and nine touchdowns. Madar finished the season with 38 tackles. Thirteen of his tackles were for loss yardage, with 10 being quarterback sacks.
Since 2001, the Pete Schmidt award has been presented to a senior football player, who has excelled on both the football field and in the classroom. Edwards, the second Olivet player to receive the award, carries a 3.50 grade point average in accounting. He was the starting punter for the Comets, averaging 32.7 yards per kick. Edwards longest punt was 48 yards and was the only punter in the league to not have a punt blocked all season.
