Football team ends season with 31-16 loss at Kalamazoo
The Olivet College football team ended its season with a 31-16 loss to Kalamazoo College this afternoon at Angell Field in Kalamazoo.
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Olivet College football team ended its season with a 31-16 loss to Kalamazoo College this afternoon at Angell Field in Kalamazoo.
The Hornets took advantage of an Olivet turnover to score their first seven points of the game. An 11-play, 83-yard drive was capped by 12-yard touchdown run by Dimeko Price with 7:24 left in the opening quarter. Olivet was forced to punt on its next possession. The Comet defense put together a goal-line stand to hold Kalamazoo to 24-yard field by Travis Braun in the closing seconds of the quarter.
Freshman Ryheem Bonivel (Caledonia/East Kentwood) intercepted a Hornet pass and returned the ball to the Kalamazoo 12. Freshman quarterback Chance Nightingale (Colon/Mendon) carried the ball twice, including to the final time five yards into the end zone. The PAT kick attempt was missed and the Hornets led 10-6 at halftime.
Kalamazoo scored a touchdown on three of its five possessions in the third quarter to take a 31-6 lead. Olivet added six points to its total when sophomore Ryan Armstrong (Rives Junction/Leslie) tackled Price in the end zone for a safety.
After getting the ball back on a free kick, the Comets used a 7-play, 56-yard drive to cut their deficit to 31-16 when senior Tony Phillips (Lansing/Waverly) completed a 16-yard touchdown pass to freshman Kyle Bryson (Rives Junction/Leslie), and Nightingale ran the ball in for a successful two-point conversion. Olivet failed to score any more points in the fourth quarter.
The Comets finished the game with 262 yards of total offense, including 218 through the air. Nightingale led the ground game with 11 carries for 29 yards. Phillips completed 17-of-32 passes for 191 yards. Freshman Aaron Haynak (Clare) led all receivers with five catches for 56 yards. Bryson had four receptions for 34 yards. Defensively, Bonivel along with freshman Trevor Garbow (Alto/Caledonia) and sophomore Ryan Sersaw (Clare) each recorded eight tackles. Bonivel forced two fumbles and Armstrong had three tackles for loss.
The Hornets had 304 yards of total offense. Price had 21 rushes for 58 yards. Two quarterbacks, Justin Danzy and Aaron McGuire, combined two complete 16-of-24 passes for 163 yards. Jimmy Frye caught three passes for 46 yards, while Alex Dietrich had three receptions for 28 yards. Connor Rzeznik topped the defense with seven total tackles.
