Football team shutout by Robert Morris, 42-0
The Olivet College football team was shutout by Robert Morris (Ill.) University, 42-0, today in its season-opener at Morris Field in Arlington Heights, Ill.
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – The Olivet College football team was shutout by Robert Morris (Ill.) University, 42-0, today in its season-opener at Morris Field in Arlington Heights, Ill.
The Eagles wasted no time scoring their first points, as Matt Westerkamp completed a 63-yard touchdown pass to Lamont Wims on the fourth play of the game. After forcing the Comets to punt on their first series, Robert Morris struck quickly on a 47-yard touchdown run for Dontrel Chance. The Eagles made the score 21-0 at halftime when Lamont Wims capped an 11-play scoring drive with a 7-yard run into the endzone.
Robert Morris used another long scoring drive to go up 28-0 with 1:31 left in the third stanza. Westerkamp threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Jamir Stovall. The Eagles closed the scoring with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Both were 2-yard runs: the first by Neno Jones, and the second by TJ Jordan.
Olivet was held to 152 net yards of offense. Freshman Demar Drayton (Muskegon/Mona Shores) led the ground game with 10 carries for 32 yards. Senior quarterback Tony Phillips (Lansing/Waverly) completed 11-of-20 passes for 114 yards. His favorite receiver was freshman Kyle Bryson (Rives Junction/Leslie) with four catches for 32 yards.
Defensively, freshman Ian Horne (Okemos) had a team-leading seven total tackles. Freshman Eric Fox (Mt. Pleasant/Sacred Heart) finished with six tackles, including five solo stops and two for loss yardage.
Robert Morris had 470 yards of offense. Wims carried the ball 20 times for 142 yards. Six other running backs combined for 28 rushes for 140 yards. Westerkamp was 16-for-23 for 188 yards. Weaver caught three passes for 28 yards. Tom Hughes and Angelo Parker each led the Eagle defense with seven tackles.
The Comets will travel to play Wisconsin Lutheran College next Saturday, Sept. 8. Game time at Warrior Field in Milwaukee Field is 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT.
