Baseball: Olivet defeats Earlham, 14-9, in season-opener

RICHMOND, Ind. – The University of Olivet baseball team used an eight-run sixth inning to begin its season with a 14-9 win over Earlham (Ind.) College today at Randal R. Sadler Stadium.

- The Comets jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. After the first two batters reached, senior Gabriel Kirck doubled down the left field line to score the first run. Later in the inning, a ground out brought home another run and an RBI-single by junior Blake Hawkins scored the third run.
- Olivet added three more runs in the second inning. With two runners in scoring position, freshman Austin Alflen roped a single to score both. After stealing second base, he came around to score on sophomore Braden Abbott's single.
- The Quakers closed the gap to 6-4 with three runs in the fourth and one more run in the fifth.
- In the sixth, the Comets sent 13 batters to score their eight runs. Sophomore Will Myrick had the first big hit of the inning with a two-run single. Following a walk to load the bases, Hawkins cleared the bases with a three-run double down the left field line.
- Earlham got one back in the seventh inning. The Quakers did not record a hit but scored four runs in the eighth. Earlham had a base runner in the ninth before Olivet turned a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.
- Olivet totaled 13 hits to six for the Quakers. Both teams committed three errors.
- Hawkins was 3-for-5 with four RBI.
- Alflen also had three hits to go along with three runs scored and two RBI.
- Myrick tallied two hits, three runs and two RBI from the leadoff spot in the lineup.
- Abbott registered two hits and two RBI.
- On the mound, sophomore Bryan Carney earned the win, throwing the first six innings. He allowed four earned runs on six hits, while striking out six batters.
- The Comets and Quakers finish the three-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow, starting at 12 p.m.
