Baseball team opens home schedule with 9-6 win over Trine
OLIVET, Mich. – Sophomore Ryan Upton faced the minimum number of batters through six innings to help the Olivet College baseball team beat Trine (Ind.) University, 9-6, this afternoon in its home-opener at the Cutler Athletic Complex.

OLIVET, Mich. – Sophomore Ryan Upton faced the minimum number of batters through six innings to help the Olivet College baseball team beat Trine (Ind.) University, 9-6, this afternoon in its home-opener at the Cutler Athletic Complex.

- The Comets wasted no time in scoring, as they used six hits to push across five runs in the first inning. Freshman Matthew Fennell led off with a double, and moved to third on a single by sophomore James Harris. Harris then moved up to second on a passed ball. Senior Logan Sella grounded out to bring home Fennell and advance Harris to third base. Junior Ben Compton hit an RBI-single to score Harris. Freshman Quartaze Phillips lined a double to move Compton to third. Both runners came around to score on a double by senior Matt Fisher. Fisher scampered home with the final run of the inning on sophomore Sylas Woll's base hit.
- Senior John Kortz blasted a solo home run to lead off the second inning.
- Olivet added two more runs in the third inning to make the score 8-0. Sella drove in Kortz with the first run. Fennell scored the second run, while Sella was in a rundown play between first and second base.
- The Comets capped their scoring with a single tally in the fifth inning. Phillips drew a walk to start the inning. A wild pitch moved him to second base, and Fisher followed with an RBI-double.
- Trine scored three runs in the top of seventh before pushing across another run in the eighth inning.
- In the ninth inning, the Thunder plated three runs and brought the tying run to the plate. A fly out to right field ended the game.
- Upton earned the pitching win. He gave up three earned runs on three hits over the first seven innings.
- Junior Dayton Rieger and senior Max Daust each threw an inning of relief.
- At the plate, Olivet totaled 13 hits, with five going for extra bases. Eight of the nine starters had at least one hit.
- Fennell, Compton and Fisher were each 2-for-4. Fennell had a double and single, Compton had two singles and Fisher had two doubles.
- Woll and Kortz each went 2-for-3. Woll had two singles, while Kortz had a home run and single.
- Fennell, Phillips and Woll scored two runs apiece.
- Fisher collected three RBI.
- The Thunder were held to five hits in 31 at-bats.
- Five different players recorded a base hit.
- The lone extra base hit was a triple by Dalton Nikirk.
- Bryce Bloode started on the mound, and allowed six runs on eight hits over three hits to be charged with the loss.
- Five relief pitchers each tossed an inning.
- Olivet travels to Westfield, Indiana, to play nine-inning games against Albion College and Alma College at Grand Sports Park. The game against Albion starts at 2 p.m., and the game against Alma will start once the first game is complete at approximately 5 p.m.
