Baseball team defeats Daniel Webster, 6-3, for first win of Merchant era

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Olivet College baseball team defeated Daniel Webster (N.H.) College, 6-3, on a blustery afternoon at the Chain of Lakes Sports Complex in Winter Haven, Florida.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- There was no scoring until the sixth inning when the teams combined for seven runs on nine hits – four runs on four hits for the Comets and three runs on five hits for the Eagles.
- In the inning, freshman Alex Parthum hit an RBI-triple to score junior Colton Dawdy for the first run. Parthum was on one end of a double steal to score the second run. Sophomore Travis Petts had an RBI-single to score freshman Matt Rehfeldt for the third run. Junior Connor Murney executed a perfect squeeze bunt to chase home sophomore Gary Tompkins III with the final run.
- Olivet pushed across a run in the seventh on an RBI-single by Dawdy.
- The Comets added an insurance run in the ninth when junior Aiden Holliday hit an RBI-double.
- With only one out in the scorebook, Daniel Webster had two runners on base but two straight infield pop outs ended the game.
FOR THE COMETS
- Olivet collected 10 total hits.
- Dawdy, Parthum and Holliday all went 2-for-5 at the plate.
- Freshman Aaron Gillespie scored two runs.
- On the mound, freshman Zac Walter picked-up the win. He allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits, while striking out six and not walking a batter in seven innings.
- Senior Brady Johnson finished the game in relief to earn the save.
FOR THE EAGLES
- Daniel Webster finished the game with 11 hits.
- Dakota Williams had three hits, while Mike Pelletier and Matt Daulton each had two.
- Mike Gamache was charged with the pitching loss after surrendering four runs (three earned) on four hits in four and one-third innings.

- After a day off tomorrow, the Comets will play a 4:15 p.m. game Thursday afternoon at the Lake Myrtle Sports Park against the State University of New York at Plattsburgh.
