Baseball team swept at Hanover, 4-2 and 10-3
The Olivet College baseball team lost both games of a non-conference doubleheader against Hanover (Ind.) College this afternoon at K.T. Young Ballpark in Hanover, Indiana. The Panthers took the games by scores of 4-2 and 10-3 to improve their overall record to 7-1, while the Comets’ record dips to 0-3.

HANOVER, Ind. – The Olivet College baseball team lost both games of a non-conference doubleheader against Hanover (Ind.) College this afternoon at K.T. Young Ballpark in Hanover, Indiana. The Panthers took the games by scores of 4-2 and 10-3 to improve their overall record to 7-1, while the Comets' record dips to 0-3.
GAME 1: Hanover 4, Olivet 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Comets took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when senior Austin Cleaver led off the game with a double, went to third on a ground out and scored on a passed ball.
- Olivet increased its to 2-0 in the second inning after junior Colton Dawdy hit a leadoff single, stole second base, advanced to third on a ground out and crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
- The Panthers had the bases loaded in the third inning before the Comets turned a double play to get out of the jam.
- Hanover leveled the score at 2-2 with a pair of runs in the fifth inning.
- The Panthers used a two-out double down the left field line to plate the winning runs in the sixth frame.
- Olivet did not go down without a fight, as it left the bases full in the seventh inning.
FOR THE COMETS
- Olivet finished the game with five total hits, with the lone extra base hit being Cleaver's double.
- Junior Aiden Holliday threw the first four innings but did not factor in the decision. He gave up a run on three hits.
- Junior Zach Oshinsky was tagged with the pitching loss after allowing the three final three runs, all unearned, on two hits over two innings.
FOR THE PANTHERS
- Hanover also had five total hits, including two for leadoff batter David Herrmann. He also drove in three runs.
- Garret Zorb earned the pitching win, while Chase Justus picked-up the save after getting the final out on a strikeout.
GAME 2: Hanover 10, Olivet 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Panthers took an early 2-0 lead on a two-run home run by Jack Shine in the first inning.
- Olivet got those two runs back in the third inning when Cleaver doubled and scored on freshman Aaron Gillespie's RBI-single through the left-side of the infield. Gillespie stole second base, went to third on a single by sophomore Travis Petts and crossed the plate on a single by freshman Alex Parthum.
- Hanover responded by pushing across two runs in the home half of the third.
- In the fifth inning, the Comets cut their deficit to one run, 4-3, after Dawdy hit the first pitch he saw over the fence for a solo home run. Olivet left the tying run stranded in scoring position.
- The Panthers responded with another run in the bottom half of the fifth.
- Hanover plated five runs in the seventh inning to go up by a 10-3 score.
FOR THE COMETS
- Olivet out-hit the Panthers, 12-9.
- Gillespie was 3-for-5 with three singles, one run and one RBI.
- Parthum collected two hits.
- Six pitchers threw in the game. Gillespie suffered the loss after pitching the first four innings, and allowing four earned runs on five hits. In relief, freshman Kyle Till struck out two of the three batters he faced.
FOR THE PANTHERS
- Shine went 2-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI.
- Tyler Fitch also had two hits.
- Herrmann reached base safely in all five of his plate appearances, including three times via a walk.
- Cole Reister earned the win in relief of starter Tanner Simpson. Simpson yielded the three runs on 10 hits over the first four and one-third innings. Reister tossed three and two-thirds scoreless innings.
UP NEXT
- Olivet will play a nine-inning game Wednesday at Earlham College. First pitch from Randal R. Sadler Stadium in Richmond, Indiana, is slated for 3:30 p.m.
