Game 1
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College baseball team was defeated by Kalamazoo College, 2-0 and 10-2, this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
The first game was a pitchers' duel between Kalamazoo's Ryan Orr and Olivet senior lefty Colin Boak. Orr won the battle, as he faced the minimum 21 batters and no-hit the Comets. The Hornets scored a run in the first inning and added another run in the fifth inning.
The Comets' only base runner was freshman Travis Petts who reached on an error but was then thrown out trying to steal second base. Boak allowed six hits and struck out four in the complete game pitching performance.
There was no scoring in the nightcap until the fourth inning when Kalamazoo plated two runs. The Hornets used a leadoff home run and a two-out single to push across three more runs in the fifth inning. Kalamazoo plated two more runs in the seventh to go up 7-0.
Olivet scored its two runs in the home half of the seventh inning. Sophomore Connor Murney led off with an infield single and went to second on a wild pitch. After sophomore Colton Dawdy walked, senior Tyler Parish lined a double down the left field line to score Murney and advance Dawdy to third. A ground out off the bat of sophomore Luke Spotts scored Dawdy.
The Hornets capped their scoring with a single tally in the eighth and two runs in the ninth. The Comets left two runners stranded on the bases in the ninth inning.
For the game, Olivet recorded 10 hits, with Parish's double being the only extra base hit. Senior Zach Kitzmiller was 2-for-4. Eight others each had one hit. Senior Mitch Galloway was saddled with the pitching loss. He gave up five earned runs on seven hits in five innings. Sophomore Joseph Crosby threw three innings of relief and senior Tom Miller tossed one inning.
Olivet and Kalamazoo will complete the four-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow at Woodworth Field in Kalamazoo, beginning at 1 p.m.
