Baseball team falls to Oakland, 17-0
The Olivet College baseball team stepped out of conference play for an afternoon, and was shutout by Oakland University, 17-0, at the OU Baseball Field in Rochester.
ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Olivet College baseball team stepped out of conference play for an afternoon, and was shutout by Oakland University, 17-0, at the OU Baseball Field in Rochester.
The Golden Grizzlies scored the only run they would need in the first inning on a two-out RBI-single by Tyler Pagano. Oakland added four runs in the second and three runs in the third to go up 8-0. The Comets left two base runners stranded on the bases in both the third and fifth innings.
Back-to-back doubles produced three more runs in the sixth inning for the Golden Grizzlies. Oakland ended its scoring with a six-run eighth inning. In the ninth inning, Olivet used a single from freshmen Chase Cook and James Herdon, and walk to freshman Travis Petts to load the bases. A fly out ended the game.
The Comets finished the game with seven hits, including a 2-for-3 performance by sophomore Luke Spotts. Petts was 1-for-2 with two walks. Olivet had four pitchers in the game. Senior Tom Miller was tagged with the loss after giving up the first five runs (one earned) on six hits in two innings. Three relievers completed the game, and allowed 12 runs (eight earned) on 10 hits.
The Comets will play Hope College in their next four-game Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association series. The first two games will be played tomorrow at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet, starting at 2 p.m. The doubleheader at Hope's Boeve Field is Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m.
