Baseball team suffers 6-2 loss to Lakeland
The Olivet College baseball team suffered a 6-2 loss to Lakeland (Wis.) College this morning at the Player Development Complex in Fort Myers, Florida.
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Olivet College baseball team suffered a 6-2 loss to Lakeland (Wis.) College this morning at the Player Development Complex in Fort Myers, Florida.
The Muskies scored twice in the first inning and tacked on another run in the second inning to go up 3-0. The Comets plated their first run in the fourth inning when senior Zach Kitzmiller walked with the bases loaded to score senior Jimmy Schoof.
Lakeland added two more runs in the top half of the fifth to extend its lead to 5-1. Olivet used three straight base hits in the seventh to push across its second run. Senior Luke Spotts hit a two-out single to get the rally started, Schoof followed with a single and junior Austin Cleaver drove home Spotts with the third base hit. The Muskies scored an unearned run in the ninth.
The top three batters in the Comet lineup combined to go 6-for-12 at the plate, as Spotts, Schoof and Cleaver each had two hits. Junior Brady Johnson also collected two hits. Senior Mitch Galloway started on the mound and gave up five runs (four earned) on eight hits in five hits. Senior Nick Taylor struck out six of the nine batters he faced in relief.
The Comets will conclude their trip to Florida tomorrow with a game against Illinois College. First pitch from Terry Park in Fort Myers is scheduled for 9 a.m.
