FORT MYERS, Fla. – Sophomore Luke Spotts scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of ninth inning to help the Olivet College baseball team walk-off with an 11-10 win over Hiram (Ohio) College this morning at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida.
With the scored tied at 9-9 to start the ninth inning, Spotts led off with a double. A ground out moved him to third base. The Terriers intentionally walked the next two Comets – junior Austin Cleaver and sophomore Colton Dawdy – to load the bases. After the second out was recorded on an infield popup, the Hiram pitcher uncorked the wild pitch to bring home Spotts with the winning run.
Olivet finished the game with 18 hits. Spotts was 4-for-6 with four runs scored and two doubles. Senior Jimmy Schoof also went 4-for-6, scored twice and collected two RBI. Cleaver, Junior Andrew Dayfield and freshman Chase Cook each had a pair of hits. Cleaver drove in two runs.
Junior Brady Johnson threw the ninth inning to earn the pitching win. Sophomore Michael O'Brien entered the game in the eighth inning with runners on first and third base, and one only out. He was able to escape the jam without either runner scoring.
The Comets play Lakeland (Wis.) College tomorrow morning. First pitch from the Player Development Complex in Fort Myers is 9 a.m.
