FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Olivet College baseball team fell to Baruch (N.Y.) College, 3-2, this morning at the Gene Cusic Classic and at the Player Development Complex in Fort Myers, Florida.
The Bearcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the third inning. The Comets did not need a hit in the fifth inning to make the score 2-1. To lead off the inning, freshman Bronson Warren was hit by a pitch and went to second when senior Jimmy Schoof walked. A ground out moved them both up one base, and sophomore Luke Spotts hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Warren.
Baruch added another run in the sixth inning on a wild pitch with runners on second and third base. Olivet used a two-out rally to score its second run in the seventh inning. Schoof hit a double through and came around to score on a single by junior Andrew Dayfield.
The Comets finished the game with five hits compared to three for the Bearcats. Five different Olivet players recorded a hit, with Schoof's double being the lone extra base hit. On the mound, senior Mitch Galloway started and yielded the three runs (two earned) in six innings, striking out three batters. Senior Tyler Parish threw two scoreless innings of relief. The Comet defense turned three double plays in the game.
Olivet returns to the field tomorrow at noon against Otterbein (Ohio) University at Terry Park.
