GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Olivet College baseball team fell to Davenport University, 11-3, in a non-conference tilt today at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex in Grand Rapids.
The Comets struck first in the first inning when senior Nikolai Jump singled, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out single by sophomore Austin Cleaver. The Panthers got that run back in the home half of the first and took a 2-1 lead with a run in the second.
Olivet leveled the score at 2-2 with a run in the third inning. Senior Beau Langs led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on junior Stephen Botti's sacrifice fly to center field. Davenport grabbed the lead back with a pair of runs in its half of the third.
There was no more scoring until the top half of the eighth when the Comets scored a run. Senior Drew Thompson hit a lead-off single and took second base on a ground out. Freshman Colton Dawdy was hit by a pitch before senior Jonny Zawacki roped a double to left-center to plate Thompson and put the tying run on third and go-ahead run on second. The Panthers got out of the inning without allowing any more runs with a ground out.
Davenport then sent 10 batters to the plate in the last half of the eighth. The Panthers had four hits and took advantage of two Olivet errors to score seven runs in the inning. The Comets were then retired 1-2-3 in the ninth.
For the game, Langs and Zawacki both collected two hits, with Zawacki's double being the only extra base hit. Junior Ryan Roeske started on the mound and gave up three earned runs on three hits over the first three innings. Four pitchers – Aiden Holliday, Joseph Crosby, Cam Hendrickson and Botti – each threw a hitless inning of relief. Zawacki surrendered the final seven runs (three earned).
The Comets resume their Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association schedule Saturday with a home doubleheader against Albion College. First pitch from the Cutler Athletic Complex is slated for 1 p.m.
