Baseball: Comets lose to Aquinas, 9-1
The Olivet College baseball team took a break from conference play for an afternoon and lost 9-1 to Aquinas College in a nine-inning contest today at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College baseball team took a break from Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play for an afternoon and lost 9-1 to Aquinas College in a nine-inning contest today at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
The Saints scored single runs in the second and third innings for a 2-0 lead. The Comets got one run back with a two-out rally in the home half of the third inning. After senior Tom Kort and freshman Luke Spotts drew back-to-back walks, senior Beau Langs lined a single into left field to score Kort from second base.
Aquinas added three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to go ahead 8-1. The Saints capped the scoring with a single tally in the seventh inning.
Offensively, Olivet was limited to seven total hits, all singles, over the nine innings of play. Sophomore Andrew Dayfield had two hits in three at-bats. Six Comet pitchers combined to allow six earned runs on 12 hits, with eight strikeouts and five walks. Junior Jarred Scheese was the losing pitcher after throwing the first four innings on the mound and giving up the first two runs on six hits. He struck out four and issued zero walks.
The Comets will resume MIAA play this Saturday and Sunday, April 11-12, against Trine (Ind.) University. The teams will play a doubleheader in Olivet on Saturday afternoon before playing the final two games at Jannen Field in Angola, Ind., on Sunday. Both doubleheaders will start at 1 p.m.
