FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Olivet College baseball team concluded its trip to Florida with a 16-2 loss to Johns Hopkins (Md.) University today at the Player Development Complex (PDC) in Fort Myers.
After the Comets took a 2-0 lead with single tallies in the first and second innings, the Blue Jays erupted for 16 unanswered runs. Johns Hopkins scored four in the second, five in the fourth, one in the fifth, two in the sixth and four in the seventh for its 16 runs.
Olivet finished the game with eight hits. Senior Jonny Zawacki led the way with two hits, with a double and an RBI. The remaining six Comet hits were all singles and all by a different player. Sophomore Zach Kitzmiller collected one RBI.
Seven Olivet pitchers saw action on the mound, allowing the 16 runs (13 earned) on 16 hits. Freshman Michael O'Brien was charged with the loss, as he gave up four runs on two hits and two walks in one and two-thirds innings.
The Comets now open Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play next Saturday and Sunday, March 21-22, against Alma College. The first two games will be played at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet before moving to Klenk Field in Alma for the final two games. Both doubleheaders will start at 1 p.m.
