Baseball: Olivet defeats MacMurray, 10-9, for first win of 2015 season
The Olivet College baseball team hung onto beat MacMurray (Ill.) College, 10-9, this morning at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida.
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Olivet College baseball team hung onto beat MacMurray (Ill.) College, 10-9, this morning at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida. The win snapped a four-game losing stream to start the 2015 season for the Comets.
Freshman Joey Richmond earned the win in relief of junior Colin Boak. Senior Jonny Zawacki worked out a bases-loaded jam in the ninth inning to secure the save.
Olivet scored four runs in the top half of the inning. The big hit of the inning was a two-run single by junior Stephen Botti. The Highlanders plated one run in bottom half of the first and four runs in the second to take a 5-4 lead. The Comets answered with a four-run third inning to surge ahead 8-5. In the inning, senior Tom Kort hit a two-run single.
MacMurray came back with three runs in the fourth to knot the score at 8-8. Olivet scored a run in the fifth inning and added what proved to be the winning run in the top half of the seventh. The Highlanders scored one run before leaving the tying run stranded in scoring position in the eighth inning.
Botti, Zawacki and freshman Luke Spotts each had three hits. Botti, Zawacki and senior Conner Magro scored two runs apiece. Kort drove in a team-leading three runs.
Olivet plays College of Wooster (Ohio) tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
