Baseball team ends season with 11-1 and 18-2 losses at Hope
The Olivet College baseball team pulled the curtain down on the 2014 season by losing two games to Hope College, 11-1 and 18-2, today at Boeve Field in Holland.

HOLLAND, Mich. – The Olivet College baseball team pulled the curtain down on the 2014 season by losing two games to Hope College, 11-1 and 18-2, today at Boeve Field in Holland.
In game one, the Comets scored a run in the first inning. Junior Beau Langs (Climax/Climax-Scotts) led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out and then scored an RBI-ground out by junior Peter Panos (Davison). From there, the Flying Dutchmen scored 11 unanswered runs – six in the bottom half of the first inning and four more runs in the second and one final run in the fifth inning.
Olivet was limited to five hits, all singles by Langs, junior Drew Thompson (Canton/Salem), junior Nikolai Jump (Williamston), senior Joel Peters (Auburn Hills/Avondale) and junior Troy Pickard (Goshen, Ind.). On the mound, sophomore David Hernandez (Lansing/Eastern) was the losing pitcher after surrendering nine runs in an inning and one-third.
In game two, Hope scored a run in the first inning. The Comets answered with a run in the top half of the second inning to tie the game at 1-1. Panos and junior Tom Kort (New Hudson/South Lyon) both walked. After the second out was recorded, senior Joel Peters (Auburn Hills/Avondale) lined a single into center field to plate Panos.
The Flying Dutchmen then sent 14 batters to the dish and scored 10 runs in the bottom half of the third inning. Hope pushed across five more runs in the fourth inning. Olivet tallied an unearned run in the fifth inning before the Dutchmen capped their scoring with a two spot in the sixth inning.
The Comets had just two hits, a single each for Panos and Peters. Sophomore Jared Scheese (Chelsea) started on the mound and allowed eight runs (four earned) in two and one-third innings to be charged with the loss. Three relievers combined to give up 10 runs (four earned) on 10 hits.
The Comets end the 2014 campaign with a 10-30 overall record, including a 7-21 mark against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opponents.
