FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Olivet College baseball team's season-opener was delayed by more than four hours after a thunderstorm rolled through Fort Myers, Fla., and after the Comets were able to start play, they suffered a 7-2 loss to Ohio Northern University inside the Lee County Player Development Complex.
The Polar Bears took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom half of the first inning. Olivet had the bases loaded with one out in the second inning. The Comets were able to plate one run after junior Beau Langs (Climax/Climax-Scotts) beat out a grounder to shortstop, which the Polar Bears recorded the out at second but weren't able to turn two. Junior Joey Myers (Holt) scored on the play.
Olivet took a 2-1 lead in the third on an RBI-groundout by junior Drew Thompson (Canton/Salem). Ohio Northern grabbed the lead back with a pair of runs in the fourth and added a single tally in the sixth to make the score 4-2. The Polar Bears broke the game open with three runs in the eighth inning.
Offensively, the Comets were held to just four hits, including two for Myers. Senior Jake Ball (Cadillac) was the losing pitcher. He gave up three earned runs on seven hits in five innings.
Olivet returns to the field Friday morning at 10 a.m. against Bluffton (Ohio) University.
