OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College baseball team improved its overall record to 14-10 with a 9-6 win over Aquinas College this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. The game ended with one out in the top of sixth inning due to lightning.
After the Saints scored a run in their half of the first inning, the Comets responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Junior Jonny Zawacki lined a double to left field, went to third on a groundout and scored on a RBI-single by senior Andrew Brawley.
Aquinas grabbed the lead back with another run in the second inning and extended its lead to 5-1 with a three-run third inning. Olivet trimmed its deficit to 5-2 in the last half of the third when Brawley hit a RBI-single to score senior Randy Young, who had led off the inning with a double down the right field line.
The Comets then sent 12 batters to the plate and scored seven times in the fourth inning. Highlighting the inning were two-run singles by sophomores Peter Panos and Beau Langs. The Saints scored a run in the sixth inning before a rumble of thunder pulled the teams off the field. After a 90-minute delay, the game was called.
At the plate, Brawley and Young each went 3-for-4. Langs, Panos and sophomore Joey Myers had two hits apiece. Sophomore Drew Thompson reached base safely in all three of his plate appearances, twice on walks and once on a single.
Sophomore Jensen Aubry started on the mound, allowing five earned runs on seven hits. Freshman Ryan Roeske pitched a hitless inning of relief to pick-up his first collegiate win. Freshman Mitchell Galloway threw an inning and one-third, giving up the one run on two hits.
