Baseball team loses to Division I foe Oakland, 14-2
The Olivet College baseball team fell to NCAA Division I foe Oakland University, 14-2, this afternoon at the OU Baseball Field in Rochester.
ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Olivet College baseball team fell to NCAA Division I foe Oakland University, 14-2, this afternoon at the OU Baseball Field in Rochester.
The Comets scored their only run in the top half of the first inning when sophomore Joey Myers (Lansing/Holt) walked with the bases loaded to score junior Jonny Zawacki (Alpena). The Grizzlies tied the game with a run in the third inning and then broke the game open with a six-run fourth inning and five-run fifth inning.
Oakland added two more runs in the seventh. Olivet scored another run in the eighth. After three straight walks loaded the bases, freshman Stephen Botti (Decatur) hit a sacrifice fly to score junior Joel Peters (Auburn Hills/Avondale).
For the game, the Comets had only four hits. Zawacki reached base safely in each of his three plate appearances, as he had a single in the first, hit a double in the third and walked in the fifth. Freshman Mitch Galloway (Coldwater), who made his first collegiate start on the mound, allowed four earned runs on five hits in three innings and was the losing pitcher. Six relievers combined to give up three earned runs on eight hits over the final five innings.
Olivet resumes Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play this Friday and Saturday with a four-game series against Hope College. Friday's doubleheader is at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet, starting at 2 p.m., and then the series moves Saturday to Hope's Boeve Stadium in Holland for two games, beginning at 1 p.m.
