OLIVET, Mich. – Four Olivet College student-athletes, junior Cassie Ciaravino (Lapeer/East) and senior Sara Wegener (Lansing/Lansing Catholic) from the women’s team, and junior Jalen Weaver (Albion) and freshman Travon Tatum (Battle Creek/Lakeview) from the men’s team, have earned 2014 All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) honors for track and field. In addition, Wegener was selected as the MIAA’s Women’s Field Athlete of the Year.
The individual event winners at the MIAA Field Day are automatic selections to the all-conference teams. The remaining selections voted by the coaches based on an athlete’s performance at the MIAA Field Day.
Wegener was an automatic selection by virtue of being the conference champion in the discus throw with a throw of 113 feet, 5 inches. She also finished in second-place in the shot put (38’11-1/2”) and hammer throw (138’9”), and fourth in javelin (109’1”). Wegener was the only MIAA athlete to finish in the top four in each of the four throwing events at the Field Day.
Ciaravino was also an automatic selection after winning the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15:37 seconds. She placed second in the high jump (5’1-3/4”) and long jump (17’3-1/4”), and fourth in the 100-meter dash (:12.94). Ciaravino also ran the first leg of the fourth-place 400-meter and fifth-place 1,600-meter relays.
Ciaravino and Wegener are repeat selections to the All-MIAA teams, as both also earned All-league honors in 2013. Their performances this year helped the Comets score 87 total points to finish in fifth-place at the MIAA Field Day.
Weaver earned a spot on the All-MIAA team after winning the 800-meter run by more than one second with a time of 1:55.81. He also ran the anchor leg of the second-place 4x400-meter relay (3:21.90). Tatum was an at-large selection after finishing second in the 100-meter dash (:11.05) and fifth in the 200-meter dash (:22.55). He also scored sixth-place points in the long jump (20’1/2”).
