Thirteen Olivet College athletic teams garner MIAA Team GPA award honor
Thirteen Olivet College athletic teams have garnered 2019-20 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Team GPA honors. This honor is presented annually to the conference teams who have a 3.30 or higher cumulative grade point average for the entire academic year.
FREELAND, Mich. – Thirteen Olivet College athletic teams have garnered 2019-20 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Team GPA honors. This honor is presented annually to the conference teams who have a 3.30 or higher cumulative grade point average for the entire academic year.
Nine of Olivet's 10 women's sports earned the honor. The women's cross country team posted the highest GPA at 3.826, which ranks fourth of all 114 MIAA teams honored. The women's tennis team had a 3.782 GPA, followed by women's golf at 3.775 and women's soccer at 3.630. The women's indoor track & field team and women's outdoor track & field teams finished with 3.575, followed by women's swimming & diving at 3.558 and softball at 3.473.
The golf team had the highest GPA among the Comet men's teams at 3.475. The men's swimming & diving team posted a 3.375 GPA, followed by men's cross country at 3.346.
OLIVET NOTES:
- The 13 teams honored this year is the most in school history for an academic year. The previous high was 11 for both the 2015-16 and 2018-19 academic years.
- The MIAA Team GPA award was presented for the first time in 1998-98. The women's golf team has received the award 16 of the 22 times, including 13 straight.
- The GPAs for five teams – women's cross country, women's golf, men's tennis, women's tennis and women's indoor track & field – are the highest in school history for their respective sport.
- The women's swimming & diving team is receiving this honor for a 15th time.
- The women's tennis team is receiving this award for a 10th consecutive academic year, and the 11th time out of the last 12 years.
- The women's soccer team is receiving this award for an eighth straight year.
- The women's indoor track & field team has received the award in each of the five years the MIAA has sponsored the sport.
- The men's golf team is receiving the award for the first time since the 2002-03 academic year.
