Bio

Head Coach of the football team from 1959 to 1970 and Athletic Director from 1960 to 1971, his leadership earned Olivet College great respect in the MIAA. Four times his football teams placed second in the league, and several times his players were selected by MIAA coaches as Most Valuable Players. In 1961, he was named Coach of the Year in Michigan. He still holds the record for the most victories of any football caoch in Olivet’s long history.

Few men have ever brought more integrity and honesty to the sports arena. All who played under his coaching learned to be gentlemen by his example. His first concern was for the young men, and then for the sport he was coaching.

Many of his students recall his excellence in the classroom, where he taught both by example and by prepared lectures. These high standards carried through in his home life as well, and in his role as an active churchman.

He was part of every facet of campus life. He helped Olivet earn accreditation by the North Central Association, and contributed to the design and construction of the Lester K. Kirk Collegiate Center and the Mott Academic Center. He gave new meaning to many of Olivet’s old and unique traditions.

For the many ways he left his mark on the campus and its students with a spirit of kindness and the force of good character, Olivet is proud to induct him into the Olivet College Athletic Hall of Fame.
