Bio
Now a professor at the University of Illinois, he made athletic
history at Olivet. In baseball, he was a four-year starter and
letter winner as a catcher. He was All-MIAA in 1954 and 1957 and
captain of the baseball team in 1957. In football, he was a
four-year starter and letter winner as a center and linebacker. He
played basketball three years. Twice he won the Athlete’s Cup
for being the letter winner with the highest grade point average,
and also won the Oaks Cup for all-around leadership and
participation.
He was active in the Phi Alpha Pi fraternity and served as editor
of the Oaks Yearbook for two years.
He won the Rackham Scholarship to the University of Michigan, and
returned to Olivet after receiving his M.A. degree to teach history
and coach. He was head baseball coach 1959-60, golf coach in 1961
and assistant football coach 1958-61.
He left Olivet to return to graduate school at the University of
Cincinnati on 1961, receiving his Ph.D. degree in ancient history
in 1965. He has received several grants for scholarly research in
Italy on Roman Republican history.
Olivet saluted him for his academic and athletic accomplishments,
and is proud to induct him into the Athletic Hall of Fame.
