Women’s track and field team finishes in fifth-place at MIAA Field Day
The Olivet College women’s track & field team finished in fifth-place at the 2014 MIAA Field Day, hosted by Alma College and at Bahlke Field in Alma. The fifth-place finish is the best finish for Olivet at the Field Day since 2007 when it also placed fifth.
ALMA, Mich. – The Olivet College women's track & field team finished in fifth-place at the 2014 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Field Day, hosted by Alma College and at Bahlke Field in Alma. The fifth-place finish is the best finish for Olivet at the Field Day since 2007 when it also placed fifth.
The Comets scored 87 total points, and were only two points behind Adrian and Alma who shared third-place with 89 points each. In Friday's events, the Comets were led by junior sprinter Cassie Ciaravino (Lapeer/East), as she won the conference title in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.37 seconds.
Ciaravino was also fourth in the 100-meter dash in 12.94 seconds. She teamed with senior Rachael Wagner (Clinton Twp./Fraser), senior Jenna Mayle (Ionia) and sophomore Courtney Reed (Battle Creek/Lakeview) for a fourth-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay (:52.62).
Also scoring points on the track were Wagner in the 400-meter dash (eighth, 1:04.14) and Mayle in the 400-meter hurdles (sixth, 1:09.69). The 4x400-meter relay quartet of Ciaravino, Mayle, Reed and Wagner was fifth with a time of 4:20.68.
In the field events, senior Sara Wegener (Lansing/Lansing Catholic) had a pair of top four finishes. She placed second in the shot put with a 38 feet, 11-1/2 toss and fourth in the javelin with a 109 feet, 1 inch throw. For the second straight year, Wegener is the only MIAA student-athlete to place in the top five in all four throwing events. Sophomore Alex Thulin (Colon) was fifth in the javelin with a 129 foot toss.
