Women’s volleyball team splits two matches on first day of Worthington Classic

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Olivet College volleyball team split two matches on the first day of the 2018 Worthington Classic at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. After losing to Dickinson (Pa.) College in three sets, the Comets came-from-behind to down Ramapo (N.J.) College in four sets.

Final Score: Dickinson def. Olivet 26-24, 25-22, 25-19

Records: Olivet 9-8 overall, Dickinson 5-10 overall

• Dickinson built an 8-5 lead in the opening set. Olivet answered with an 8-2 run to go up 13-10. The Red Devils responded with a 4-1 run to level the score at 14-14. The teams traded points, causing three more tied scores. After the last one at 19-19, two kills by junior Morgan Champion put the Comets on top, 21-19. Four consecutive Dickinson points made the score 23-21. Olivet made the score 23-21 before the Red Devils got to set point at 24-22. Two Comet points evened the score until back-to-back Red Devils ended the set in their favor.
• Dickinson held the lead early in the second set. Olivet then turned an 8-6 deficit into a 13-9 lead with a 7-1 run. The Comets maintained their lead until the Red Devils went ahead for the first time, 18-17. Two Olivet points, followed by two Dickinson points made the score 20-19. The Comets evened the score one final time at 20-20. The Red Devils ended the set on a 5-2 run.
• Olivet led 1-0 in the third set. Dickinson answered with a 10-0 run and never looked back.

• Champion topped the team with 10 kills, followed by junior Brittney Prince with seven.
• Junior Madelyn Notenbaum dished out 18 set assists.
• Freshman Drue Mullin contributed a match-leading 15 digs.

• Jamie Singer led the way with 10 kills, while Emma Lange had eight kills and three blocks.
• Kristin Allgaier recorded 27 set assists.
• Christina Chu registered a team-high 13 digs.

Final Score: Olivet def. Ramapo 17-25, 25-18, 26-24, 25-17

• The Comets scored the first four points, including two aces by Champion, to start the match. Olivet continued to lead until the Roadrunners used a 5-0 run to turn a 9-7 deficit into a 12-9 lead. The Comets were not able to recover from that deficit.
• Like the first set, Olivet put the first four points on the scoreboard in the second set. Ramapo would come back to tie the match, but it would never take the lead back.
• The Roadrunners took a 12-10 lead in the third set. Olivet answered with four straight points to take its own two-point advantage, 14-12. The Comets held the advantage until Ramapo went ahead by a point on three occasions. Following the last time at 20-19, Olivet took the lead back twice 22-21 and 23-22. Two Roadrunner kills put them back on top, 24-23. The Comets tied the score on a Champion kill, followed by ace Prince and an attack error to hand the set to Olivet, 26-24.
• The Comets held the lead for the entire fourth set.

• Champion recorded a match-high 19 kills and 25 digs.
• Prince added 16 kills and a .414 attack percentage.
• Notenbaum had 48 set assists.

• Hannah Franscella finished with 16 kills.
• Kate Shirkey had 29 set assists.
• Morgan Ridgway tallied 13 digs.
