Women’s volleyball team upended at Saint Mary’s in three sets

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Olivet College volleyball team fell to Saint Mary's (Ind.) College in three sets this afternoon at the Angela Athletic Facility in Notre Dame, Indiana.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Belles held a 6-5 lead in the opening set before going on a 7-1 run to go up 13-6. Saint Mary's then stretched its lead to eight points. The Comets fought back to cut their deficit down to two points, 23-21. Two Belle kills ended the set in their favor.
- Saint Mary's held an early 4-2 lead in the second set. Olivet came back with three straight points to go up 5-4. The teams traded points until the Belles went ahead 8-7. Three straight Comet points put them ahead 10-8. Saint Mary's responded with a 5-1 run to take the lead back, 13-11. The Belles extended their lead twice to four points, with the last time being 20-16. Olivet scored three straight points to close the gap to a single point at 20-19, but it would not get any closer for the rest of the set.
- In the third, Olivet led 2-1 until Saint Mary's put five consecutive points on the scoreboard for 6-2 lead. The Belles pushed their lead to as many as six points, 14-8. The Comets battled back to level the score at 17-17. After a timeout, Saint Mary's scored eight of the final 10 points to win the set, 25-19.
FOR THE COMETS
- Sophomore Morgan Champion totaled a team-best 14 kills, with zero attack errors on 33 attempts for a .424 hitting percentage.
- Senior Courtney Cronkright and sophomore Brittney Prince each had nine kills.
- Sophomore Madelyn Notenbaum recorded 32 set assists.
- Sophomore Gabrielle Mundt topped the defense with 13 digs.
FOR THE BELLES
- Rachel Bonek led all players with 18 kills.
- Alyssa Chong was next with 10 kills.
- Morgan VanderWey finished with 45 set assists.
- Nicole Lukens had a match-high 18 digs.

- Olivet is on the road next Wednesday, Sept. 27, to play Alma College. First serve inside the Art Smith Arena is 6:30 p.m.
