Volleyball team swept by #4 Calvin

OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College volleyball team lost in three sets to Calvin College, 25-17, 25-19, 25-20) tonight at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet. The Knights are the No. 4 ranked team in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 poll.
In the first set, Calvin broke a 7-7 tie with a 4-0 run to take an 11-7 lead. The Comets battled back and closed the deficit to two points three times, with the last time being 13-11. From there, the Knights used another 4-0 run to gain a 17-11 lead and Olivet got no closer for the rest of the set.
Calvin led the second set from start-to-finish. The Comets held a pair of three-point leads in the third set at 9-6 and 10-7. Olivet continued to lead through the middle stages of the set at 16-14. The Knights then ripped off three straight points to take a 17-16 advantage.
The Comets did not go down without a fight, trailing by only one point on four occasions late in the set. Following the last time at 21-20, Calvin scored four straight points to win the set and match.
Despite the loss, Olivet had a .213 attack percentage, recording 35 kills with only 15 errors on 94 attempts. Senior Marissa Guile had a superb match, leading all players with 14 kills. She had zero errors on 21 attacks for a match-leading .667 hitting percentage. Junior Re'Gene Thompson also reached double figures in kills with 11.
Junior Danielle Bearden dished out 31 set assists. Sophomore Courtney Cronkright collected a team-leading 10 digs, while senior Dallas James had eight digs.
The Comets travel to play Trine (Ind.) University Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
