FREELAND, Mich. – Olivet College junior Michaela Kaliniak has been named the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Indoor Field Athlete of the Week.
At the Grand Valley State University Bob Eubanks Open, Kaliniak broke the school record in the pole vault with a 10 feet, 4-3/4 inch clearance. The performance placed her third in the event and is the top mark among MIAA student-athletes this winter. Kaliniak cleared the bar on her first try at the opening two heights (2.72m and 2.87m) before needing two attempts to go over the bar at 3.02m. She cleared the bar on her third and final try at the school-record height.
"Michaela is an example of how putting in the hard work will pay off," said head coach Karen Lutzke. "She is very passionate about pole vault and strives every day to better herself and others around her."
Kaliniak and the Comets are back in action Saturday at the Trine University Keith Turner Alumni Invitational. Events get under way at 10 a.m.
