Track & field: Olivet men place fifth, women finish sixth at Trine Indoor Championships
The Olivet College men’s and women’s indoor track & field teams competed against most of their MIAA rivals today at the Trine University Indoor Championships in Angola, Indiana.
ANGOLA, Ind. – The Olivet College men's and women's indoor track & field teams competed against most of their Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) rivals today at the Trine University Indoor Championships inside the Keith E. Busse/Steel Dynamics Athletic Recreations Center in Angola, Indiana. The Comet men's team totaled 47 points to place fifth, while the women totaled 36 points to place sixth.
The men's team scored the majority of its points on the track. Senior Jalen Weaver crossed the finish line first in the 800-meter run by more than three seconds with a time of 1:53.39. The time was a season-best and moves him up into 11th on the NCAA DIII Indoor performance list.
Sophomore Connor Bauserman was third in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.17. Despite a third-place finish in the 5,000-meter run, senior Greg Lutzke broke the school indoor record with a time of 15:16.32. Senior Andrew Benkovsky placed sixth in the mile run with a time of 4:29.79. Olivet's 4x400-meter relay finished in second-place with an indoor school-record time of 3:26.50. The distance medley relay was third with a time of 10:57.79.
Freshman Mitchell Smith had the Comets' best finish in the field events, as he placed fourth in the weight throw with a school-record 14.97 meter toss. Junior Travon Tatum finished in seventh-place in the long jump, leaping 6.11 meters. Freshman Drew Miller was eighth in the shot put with a school-record 12.99 meter throw.
For the women, Senior Cassie Ciaravino was first among MIAA student-athletes in the high jump. Her clearance at 1.60 meters equaled her own indoor school-record mark. She also placed fourth in the long jump at 4.97 meters. Freshman Michaela Kaliniak won the pole vault with a 2.90 meter clearance.
On the track, freshman Allyson Schultz broke the school record in the 5,000-meter run at 19:21.36 for the Comets' top performance.
Olivet is now off until it begins the outdoor season March 28 at the Defiance (Ohio) College Invitational.
