Swimming & diving teams place fourth and fifth at MIAA Championships

The Olivet College men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams finished fourth- and fifth-place at the 2018 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Championships, held at the Venema Aquatic Center in Grand Rapids. Over the four days of events, the Comet men totaled 246 points, while the women had 208 points.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Olivet College men's and women's swimming & diving teams finished fourth- and fifth-place at the 2018 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Championships, held at the Venema Aquatic Center in Grand Rapids. Over the four days of events, the Comet men totaled 246 points, while the women had 208 points.

FOR THE WOMEN

  • Ana Paula Montes de Oca won her second individual event of the championships, topping the field by almost 30 seconds in the 1,650-yard freestyle in a school-record and NCAA "B" cut time of 17:17.24.
  • Delaney Graham and Emma Cole also scored points in the 1,650 freestyle, placing 15th (20:31.12) and 16th (21:30.93), respectively.
  • Graham also finished in 15th-place in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 56.14 seconds, while Sabrina Butler was 16th at 59.11 seconds.
  • Samantha Butler placed 15th in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:23.99.
  • The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Graham, Sabrina Butler, Keanalanimeleo'kekai Kunz and Montes de Oca touched the wall fifth at 3:48.96.
  • Montes de Oca swam a time trial in the 200-yard butterfly and broke the school record with a time of 2:06.36.

FOR THE MEN

  • Two Comets placed in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Zach Meharg was sixth at 17:04.91, and Bryan Plesner was 12th at 18:10.87. Meharg's time is the 10th-fastest in school history.
  • Eric Wood touched the wall eighth in the 100-yard freestyle. His time of 47.37 seconds is the eighth-fastest in school history in the event.
  • Plesner finished 14th in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:05.84.
  • Tony Farmer and Patrick Gault scored in the 200-yard breaststroke. Farmer was 14th in 2:29.18, and Gault was 15th in 2:32.88.
  • Kolton Epplett came home with a 14th-place time of 2:13.94 in the 200-yard butterfly.
  • Dalton Miner had 334.85 points on the three-meter diving board to finish in 11th-place.
  • The 400-yard freestyle relay quartet of Ian Bishop, Meharg, Tom Decker and Wood capped the championships with a fifth-place swim at 3:20.51.
  • Wood time-trialed the 50-yard freestyle and finished in the 10th-fastest time in school history at 21.65 seconds.
