Wrestling: Olivet dominates Trine, 42-3, in final dual match of season
The Olivet College won the first nine bouts, scoring bonus points in seven, to dominate Trine (Ind.) University, 42-3, in its final dual match of the season tonight inside The Cutler Event Center in Olivet.
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College won the first nine bouts, scoring bonus points in seven, to dominate Trine (Ind.) University, 42-3, in its final dual match of the season tonight inside The Cutler Event Center in Olivet.
The match started at 141 pounds, and sophomore Curtis Blackwell quickly put Olivet ahead 6-0 when he rolled through a cradle to pin Jeffrey Helm in one minute and 14 seconds. Senior Kyle Witgen used a takedown in the second period to pull away for a 7-3 win at 149 pounds.
At 157 pounds, senior Jacob Gould pinned Kevin Groves with six seconds left in the bout to make the score 15-0. After a scoreless first period in the 165-pound bout, senior Dan Fleet scored 12 unanswered points over the final two periods for the major decision win.
Sophomore Kevin Papak earned a forfeit win at 174 pounds, and the Comets led 25-0 at the intermission. Senior Nick Allen moved to 184 pounds and posted an 8-0 major decision. Junior Thomas Hall used a big first period with a takedown and a pair of three-point near-falls to win 9-2 win at 197 pounds, and Olivet surged ahead 32-0.
At 285 pounds, senior Ryan Steverson was leading 8-1 in the third period when he took Tyler Prater to his back for a pin with 32 seconds remaining in the bout. Sophomore Michael Schmidt recorded an 11-0 major decision at 125 pounds to make the score 42-0. Brandon Preston scored a 7-2 decision at 133 pounds for the Thunder's only win.
Olivet returns to the mats Saturday when it hosts the 2015 Mid-States Conference Tournament. Action gets under way at 9 a.m.
