Olivet College’s Pipkin and Vanderhyde earn Academic All-District IV first-team honors
Olivet College’s Lindsay Pipkin (White Lake/Lakeland) and Kyle Vanderhyde (Sparta) have earned 2008-09 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV At-large first-team honors.
OLIVET, Mich. -- Olivet College's Lindsay Pipkin (White Lake/Lakeland) and Kyle Vanderhyde (Sparta) have earned 2008-09 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV At-large first-team honors. Both are now eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America® College Division At-large honors.
Pipkin, who graduated with a 3.85 grade point average (GPA) in biology, was a four-year letterwinner on the women's golf team. A four-time first-team All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association selection, she helped the Comets win three straight MIAA championships and berths to the NCAA Division III National Championships. During the fall season, Pipkin averaged a team-low 80.0 strokes in 13 rounds. This spring, she posted a 80.0 stroke average in 11 rounds.
For her efforts during the 2008-09 season, Pipkin was named to the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) All-American second-team, and a NGCA All-Great Lakes Region team. She helped Olivet climb as high as No. 8 in the golfstat.com NCAA Head-to-Head rankings. In 84 career rounds, Pipkin has an 83.2 stroke average and holds the 18-hole school record with a 72. Off the course, she was a member of Amnesty International and Omicron Delta Kappa.
Pipkin has been accepted and will start classes in the Physician's Assistant program at the University of Toledo (Ohio) later this summer.
Vanderhyde has a 3.85 GPA in mathematics education. He was a four-year letterwinner on the wrestling team. This season, Vanderhyde posted a 39-7 record with 29 wins by major decision or higher and three of his losses were against NCAA Division I competition. He won the 174-pound championship at the Ohio Northern University, Elmhurst and Wheaton/Pete Willson Invitationals, and posted a 4-0 record at the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals.Vanderhyde was also the only NCAA Division III wrestler to place at the Midlands Tournament.
Vanderhyde finished his career with a 110-20 record and was twice an NCAA All-American. Off the wrestling mat, he was a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Last summer,Vanderhyde participated in a 15-day service, training and mission trip to Central Asia.
Vanderhyde recently accepted a position at The Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, N.J. He will be a mathematics teacher and the head wrestling coach.
The Academic All-America® program recognizes student-athletes who have succeeded in athletic competition and in the classroom. The members of the All-District IV teams are selected by sports information directors in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. To be eligible, the student-athlete must have legitimate athletic credentials and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.30.
