Women’s basketball team opens season with 75-44 loss at Oberlin
The Olivet College women’s basketball team opened its 2015-16 season with a 75-44 loss to Oberlin (Ohio) College today at Phillips Gymnasium in Oberlin, Ohio.
OBERLIN, Ohio – The Olivet College women's basketball team opened its 2015-16 season with a 75-44 loss to Oberlin (Ohio) College today at Phillips Gymnasium in Oberlin, Ohio.
The teams traded baskets in the early stages of the first period, with the Yeowomen holding a 5-4 lead at the 7:25 mark. Oberlin then built its lead to 12 points, 20-8, with 22 seconds left in the opening period. The Yeowomen extended their lead to 24 points, 41-17, at the 1:55 mark of the second period. The Comets scored four straight points to trim their deficit to 20 points, 41-21, before Oberlin made a free throw to make the score 42-21 at halftime.
There was no scoring for the first four minutes and 37 seconds of the third period. Olivet would get as close as 18 points after senior Dallas Austin drained a three-pointer for a 48-30 score with two minutes remaining in the third period. The Yeowomen scored the final four points of the period to lead 52-30 after three periods of play. The Comets got no closer for the rest of the game.
Junior Katie McKinnon came off the bench to score a team-leading eight points in her Olivet debut. Junior Gabby Trudell added six points. Junior Jillian Nickels pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds. Senior Leighann Thilo dished out three assists.
Caroline Hamilton paced Oberlin with 19 points. Lindsey Bernhardt chipped-in with 15 points. Tyler Parlor contributed a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Comets host Rochester College in their home-opener Monday, Nov. 16. Tip-off from inside The Cutler Event Center is 7:30 p.m.
