The Olivet College women's basketball team began the second half of its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association schedule with a 63-46 loss to Calvin College today at Van Noord Arena in Grand Rapids.
Olivet led briefly, 4-3, in the first half. After a 6-6 tie, the Knights scored nine consecutive points to take a 15-9 lead. They did not trail for the rest of the game. Calvin led by as many as 18 points, 32-14, with 38 seconds left before halftime. The Comets got two free throws with 18 seconds left to make it a 16-point game, 32-16, at the break. Olivet never got any closer than 12 points for the rest of the game.
Junior Kaitlin Oleksyn (Kalamazoo/Parchment) and sophomore Olivia Yarrell (Lansing/Sexton) each scored 12 points to lead the Comets. Yarrell along with seniors Gabrielle Federau (Okemos) and Chanail Postley (Battle Creek/Lakeview) grabbed five rebounds apiece.
Calvin's Carissa VerKaik posted a double-double, 12 points and 10 rebounds, to lead the Knights. Brook VanEck had a game-high 13 points.
Olivet will return home for its two games next week. On Wednesday, the Comets play Kalamazoo College at 7:30 p.m., and on Saturday, they play MIAA-leader Hope College at 3 p.m.
