Softball team loses twice at Calvin
The Olivet College softball team was run-ruled in both games against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) rival Calvin College today at the Gainey Athletic Facility in Grand Rapids. The Knights defeated the Comets, 10-1 and 11-1, in five innings.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Olivet College softball team was run-ruled in both games against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) rival Calvin College today at the Gainey Athletic Facility in Grand Rapids. The Knights defeated the Comets, 10-1 and 11-1, in five innings.

- The Knights pushed across one run in the first inning and five runs in the second inning to take a 6-0 lead.
- The Comets got a run back in the third inning. Sophomore Erin Scanlon walked to lead off the inning. She advanced to second on a bunt single by junior Payton Watson and both runners moved up on a sac bunt. Senior Kinslea Blouin scored Scanlon with a sacrifice fly.
- Calvin plated four runs in the home half of the third inning.
- Olivet left two runners stranded on base in the seventh.
- At the plate, Blouin was officially 1-for-1 with a walk, RBI and sac fly.
- Four other players each had one hit.
- In the circle, junior Gracie Boyle was tagged with the loss. She surrendered 10 runs (seven earned) on 11 hits over two and two-thirds innings.
- Senior Andrea Rico recorded the final five outs.
- From the leadoff spot, Hannah Horvath was 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored.
- Grace Stock had two hits and four RBI.
- Hannah Biddlecome also tallied two hits.
- Anna Gernant earned the complete game, pitching win. She allowed an earned run on five hits, with five strikeouts and three walks.
- There was no scoring in the first three innings.
- The Knights took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning on a home run by Kayla Groen.
- Calvin sent 12 batters to the plate and scoring eight runs in the top half of the fifth inning.
- The Comets broke up the shutout in the bottom half of the fifth inning. Freshman Karina Marin hit double to right field. Freshman Dayoni Mahlich entered the game to run for Marin. After the second out was recorded, freshman pinch-hitter Lily Eagleton poked the ball into shallow center field to allow Mahlich to score from second base.
- Olivet was held to six hits.
- The lone-extra base hit was Marin's double.
- Rico was charged with the pitching loss. She gave up six earned runs on eight hits over the four and one-third innings.
- Junior Taylor Shellenberger and freshman Danielle Erickson each got an out in the fifth inning.
- All nine batters reached base safely and scored at least one run, and eight of the nine had a hit.
- Horvath was 3-for-4 with two RBI.
- Abi Colon hit two doubles and drove in two runs.
- Groen, Maddie DeGroot and Grace Quiggle also had two hits apiece.
- Ellie Borst picked-up the pitching win. She scattered the six hits over the five innings, and struck out three.
- Calvin's Hannah Horvath entered the second game of the doubleheader with a perfect 16-of-16 steal attempts. In the second inning, Olivet senior catcher Danielle McCoy threw her out trying to steal second base.
- Prior to the final MIAA games tomorrow, Blouin currently sits first among all players with a .479 batting average and .917 slugging percentage in 16 league games.
- The Comets will play a non-conference doubleheader Sunday against Roosevelt (Ill.) University, starting at 2 p.m. CT. The games will be played at the Chicago Bandits Stadium in Rosemont, Illinois.
