Game vs. Alverno cancelled due to thunderstorms
CAPE CORAL, Fla. – The Olivet College softball team defeated Wilmington (Ohio) College, 4-1, in its season-opener today at the Gene Cusic Classic and inside the Cape Coral Sports Complex in Cape Coral, Fla. The Comets were leading Alverno (Wis.) College, 1-0, in the fourth inning before a thunderstorm rolled through, causing the game to be cancelled.
Batting as the home team against Wilmington, Olivet scored three runs in the bottom half of the second inning. With the bases loaded, sophomore Maddy Siebenmark (Bridgman) lined a single to left field, scoring freshman Devon Mayse (Adrian/Madison). After the second out was recorded, junior Ashley Milheim (Eaton Rapids) hit a two-run double in the left-center field gap to score freshmen Jessica Palumbo (Oxford) and Christine Wood (East Lansing/Haslett).
The Quakers plated an unearned run in the third inning. Olivet got that run back in the fourth inning when freshman Kelsey Scheenks (Bronson) scored on an RBI-single by senior Lauren Lenard (Dimondale/Lansing Catholic). Wilmington had tying run at the plate with only one out in the seventh inning but a pop out and strikeout looking ended the game.
For the game, Milheim had two of Olivet's nine hits and two RBI. Seven others each had one hit. The only other extra base hit was a pinch-hit triple by senior Alyssa Nielsen (Greenville) to lead off the sixth inning. In the circle, freshman Morgan Stratton (Grand Blanc) scattered four hits over the seven innings, while striking out four batters, to earn her first collegiate win.
Before the rain came against Alverno, the Comets scored their run in the second inning. Lenard walked, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mayse and scored on a double by Palumbo. In the circle, freshman Ashlynn Grubb (LaGrange, Ind./Lakeland) had eight strikeouts. Since five innings weren't completed, these statistics are wiped out and will not be included in the official statistics for the season.
Olivet continues play in Florida tomorrow with a 9 a.m. game against Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts and 11 a.m. game versus Northland (Wis.) College.
