Softball team swept by Grand Valley, 10-1 and 5-1
The Olivet College softball team opened the northern portion of its schedule today and was swept in a non-conference doubleheader at NCAA Division II foe Grand Valley State University. Grand Valley won by scores of 10-1 and 5-1.

The Olivet College softball team opened the northern portion of its schedule today and was swept in a non-conference doubleheader at NCAA Division II foe Grand Valley State University. Grand Valley won by scores of 10-1 and 5-1.
In the opener, Olivet pushed a run across in the first inning. Senior Jenny Robbins (Fenton) walked with one out and stole second. Sophomore Kelsey Greene (Burr Oak) singled to leftfield, which moved Robbins to third. Freshman Meg Wernowsky (Bellevue) hit a single through the right-side of the infield, scoring Robbins. The Lakers took a 4-1 lead with four runs in the bottom half of the second inning. Grand Valley scored five runs (four unearned) in the third inning and closed the scoring with a single tally in the fourth. The game ended early because of the eight-run mercy rule.
For the game, the Comets were held to just four base hits, including a pair of singles by Greene. In the circle, junior Katie Harper (Vassar) was charged with the loss. Sophomore Rachel Cook (Traverse City/Central) pitched in relief.
In the nightcap, Grand Valley scored a run in the first inning on a solo home run. Olivet got on the scoreboard and leveled the score at 1-1 with an unearned run in the second frame. Freshman Breanna Bunker (Charlotte) walked and went to second on an error by the Laker shortstop off a batted ball by sophomore Mallory Schug (Climax/Galesburg-Augusta). After an out was recorded, Robbins lined a hit in the right-center gap to score Bunker.
Grand Valley answered with one run in bottom half of the second and third innings. The Lakers padded their lead with a two-run fourth inning. The Comets had at least one runner on base in the third through sixth innings, but was denied any more runs.
Offensively, Olivet was limited to four hits. Robbins had one single, one double and one stolen base. In the circle, Greene pitched all six innings and was the losing pitcher. She gave up five runs on 13 hits.
The Comets will play their home-opener Thursday when Huntington (Ind.) University visits the Cutler Athletic Complex for a doubleheader, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
