Men’s volleyball team suffers four-set loss to Greenville in MCVL-opener

GREENVILLE, Ill. – The Olivet College men's volleyball team opened Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League play tonight with a four-set loss to Greenville (Ill.) University inside the H.J. Long Gymnasium in Greenville, Illinois.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Panthers raced out to a 7-1 lead in the opening set. Greenville continued to lead until the Comets used a late 6-2 run to tie the set at 23-23. The Panthers scored the final two points to win the first set, 25-23.
- With the score even at 3-3 in the second set, Olivet went on a 3-0 run to go up 6-3. The Comets stretched their lead to eight points, 16-8. The Panthers scored six straight points to trim their deficit down to two points, 16-14. Olivet went back ahead by five points twice, 20-15 and 21-16. Greenville closed the gap one more time to two points, 21-19 and 22-20, before the Comets scored three of the last four points to win the set 25-21.
- With the exception of two early deficits, the Panthers led the majority of the third set. Greenville's largest lead in the set was 11 points. Following the last time at 22-11, the Comet used a 5-0 scoring run to make the score 22-16. The Panthers scored the final three points for a 25-16 victory.
- Greenville led 7-4 in the fourth set. Olivet came back with a 4-0 run for an 8-7 advantage. The teams traded points to result in a 14-13 Comet lead. The Panthers tallied the next six points to go up 19-14. Olivet fought back to trim its deficit down to three points, 21-18. The Comets did not get any closer, as Greenville won the set 25-21.
FOR THE COMETS
- Olivet finished the match with 42 total kills, including 11 each for freshman Karl Deichman and sophomore Trent Robinson.
- Sophomore Aaron Giorgi posted team-highs in assists (36) and digs (15).
- Sophomore Brock Pringle notched four solo blocks.
FOR THE PANTHERS
- Kyle Ward had 13 of the 45 Greenville kills.
- George Black was next with 11 kills.
- Tanner Smith dished out 42 assists.
- Nick Corrigan recorded 14 digs.
