Olivet College trio named to 2018 All-MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Team
Olivet College senior Bruce Baker, and freshmen Tyler Chavalia and Dewan Hawthorne have been named to the 2018 All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Outdoor Track and Field Team. The trio landed on the team by virtue of winning an event at the 2018 MIAA Field Day.
FREELAND, Mich. – Olivet College senior Bruce Baker, and freshmen Tyler Chavalia and Dewan Hawthorne have been named to the 2018 All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Outdoor Track and Field Team. The trio landed on the team by virtue of winning an event at the 2018 MIAA Field Day.
Baker won the 10,000-meter run in a school-record time of 32:06.51. He also finished third in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:31.30. Chavalia took the MIAA title in the 100-meter dash in a season-best time of 10.84 seconds. He also placed third in the 200-meter dash in 22.53 seconds.
Hawthorne claimed the win in the 400-meter hurdles, stopping the clock at a season-best time of 54.96 seconds. Chavalia and Hawthorne also ran legs of the third-place 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays.
The performances helped the Comets finish in sixth-place in the team standings. The 93 points scored by the Olivet men are believed to be the most in school history at the MIAA Field Day. In addition, the three All-MIAA selections matches the 1983 team for the most in school history for a season.
