Men’s soccer team loses 2-0 to Adrian
Olivet College lost 2-0 to Adrian College in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men’s soccer contest on a rainy afternoon today at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
OLIVET, Mich. – Olivet College lost 2-0 to Adrian College in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) men's soccer contest on a rainy afternoon today at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
The Comets earned a corner kick only 29 seconds into the game. Off the corner, sophomore Vince Geremia headed the ball towards the goal but the shot was stopped by the keeper. In the 10th minute, junior Gregory Petty's shot sailed wide of the net.
Adrian answered with back-to-back shots, which found the back of the net to take a 2-0 lead. The first came inside the 6-yard box and shot into the goal at the far post. The second was a blast from 16 yards out to the center of the goal.
Olivet had three more chances to score a goal, with the first two tries being saved by the keeper and the third went wide of the net. Both teams took five shots in the first 45 minutes of play. One of the Comets' best opportunity to score a goal in the second half came with little less than seven minutes remaining when junior Michael Brait's shot from around 12 yards out was saved.
For the game, Olivet finished with a 13-9 advantage in total shots, including 8-5 edge in shots on-goal. The Comets also doubled-up the Bulldogs in corner kicks, 8-4. Brait and Petty led the way with three shots apiece, while Geremia and sophomore Vince Shambaugh each had two. Senior Ryan Grashik played all 90 minutes in goal and collected three saves.
Olivet closes the curtain on the 2015 season Saturday night when it plays a 7 p.m. game at Hope College.
NOTE: Prior to the game, the Comets celebrated Senior Day by recognizing Grashik and Joey Sieg who were playing in their final home game.
