ADRIAN, Mich. – The Olivet College men's soccer team had a 24-8 advantage in total shots, but none found the back of the net, as the Comets battled to a 0-0 double overtime stalemate against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) rival Adrian College tonight under the lights at Docking Stadium in Adrian.
"It was nice to end the run of defeats by getting a 0-0 tie," said Olivet head coach Dan Bulley. "But we feel disappointed not bringing home the win and three points after out-shooting Adrian by such a large margin."
The Comets had 10 shots in each of the first two halves, and then one more in the first extra period and three in the second overtime. The Bulldogs collected three shots in each half and then one in each overtime period. For Olivet, freshman Alistair Law out-shot Adrian on his own, as he was credited with nine total shots. Three of his shots were placed on-goal.
Freshman Matthew Henderson, junior Gregory Petty and senior Joey Sieg registered three shots apiece. All three of Petty's shots were on-frame. Senior Ryan Grashik played all 110 minutes and stopped two shots.
"Positively, we created a lot of goal scoring opportunity but could not convert," said Bulley. "Joey and Greg had both seemingly scored a goal but the Adrian goalkeeper pulled out two of the best saves I have seen from close range. Joey's effort was the last kick of regulation time and would have seen us take the win."
The Comets will end the first half of the league schedule next Tuesday, Oct. 6, when they host Hope College at 4 p.m.
"It's another building block in place for this young team and the guys had fun tonight," said Bulley. "It keeps us hungry going into a game against a Hope team who is also facing its struggles this year. The guys looked great tonight and we are making progress in all the right areas. We have a smart bunch of student athletes who understand their role. I am very excited to keep building around the guys we have."
